The blaze happened on Thursday night, Dec. 7 at a three-story condominium complex in White Plains at 87 North Broadway, when a fire ignited on the building's second floor.
According to White Plains Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 274, arriving crews found extreme clutter conditions and high heat inside the room where the fire had begun, which forced them to retreat into a hallway.
Another engine company then entered the building through its fire escape and tried approaching the blaze from an adjacent room as flames began reaching the third floor.
Eventually, firefighters were able to make sure the fire did not engulf the entire building, according to officials.
After the blaze was put out, four firefighters and one civilian were taken to White Plains Hospital. The extent of their injuries was not revealed.
An unknown number of residents were also displaced by the incident, the department said.
In addition to White Plains crews, firefighters from Greenburgh, Hartsdale, Scarsdale, Yonkers, New Rochelle, and Eastchester also helped respond to the fire.
